Over the past few months, we’ve seen a rise in EV charger issues stemming from one common decision: opting for self-installation or getting help from a “family electrician.”
At first glance, this approach seems practical—lower upfront cost, convenient, and quick. But time and again, we’ve had to break the news that the installation wasn’t compliant with required standards. And unfortunately, when installations don’t follow safety codes, warranty is voided—even if the charger itself had manufacturing defects.
What Can Go Wrong?
Some of the real-world issues we’ve encountered:
- Faulty protection components that fail during a fault event
- Charger errors that turn out to be from improper electrical configuration
- Hidden faults in the electrical supply line that weren’t diagnosed during installation
In these situations, the fix isn’t just a service call. It often means:
- Removing the entire original installation
- Replacing protection components and cables
- Sometimes even replacing the charger itself
This leads to additional cost, longer down times, and understandably, frustration for everyone involved.
We’re Not Here to Blame
We know these cases are never easy. Our team always tries to help, regardless of who did the installation. But when the foundation is done wrongly from day one, there’s only so much we can do without putting your safety at risk.
We’ve had a couple of tough conversations, and we don’t take them lightly. But safety will always be our top priority—even if that means saying something the customer might not want to hear.
How to Avoid This
We encourage all potential and current EV owners and homeowners to:
- Read our past articles—many of them are still relevant today
- Reach out to us if you have questions about chargers, installation methods, safety standards, or product suitability
Even if you don’t use our services, we’re happy to guide you. When it comes to safety, there are no secrets in our book.
Let our obsession with quality protect your safety.
Because when it comes to EV charging and electrical systems, there’s no room for compromise.
