When the Fuse Blows — It Is Protecting You

By Alvin Wong, CEO of Innovative Green Power Sdn. Bhd.

Recently, we came across a real case of a house fire that started at the fuse and neutral casing area before the TNB meter.

The damage did not begin inside the home.
It started at the incoming supply point.

This is not coincidence.

This is what happens when the electrical system’s safety mechanism is misunderstood — or worse, bypassed.

The Fuse Is Not the Problem

At Innovative Green Power (IGP), we want to be absolutely clear:

The fuse is there to protect your entire electrical system from overcurrent situations.

When a fuse blows, it is doing its job.

It disconnects supply to prevent:

  • Overheating

  • Cable insulation failure

  • Neutral meltdown

  • Electrical arcing

  • Fire

A blown fuse is not an inconvenience.
  It is a warning.

The Dangerous Advice We’ve Been Seeing

We have recently seen misleading advice from unethical installers suggesting that customers simply increase the fuse size to prevent it from blowing.

Let us be clear:

Increasing the fuse size without upgrading the wiring is like removing a safety barrier and inviting danger into your home.

The fuse is intentionally designed as the weak link.

If you strengthen that weak link without upgrading everything else — cables, neutral, meter termination, distribution board — something else will fail instead.

And what fails next does not fail safely.
  It burns.

Why This Is Even More Critical for EV Charging

EV charging introduces sustained high current over long periods.

Unlike a kettle or microwave that runs for minutes, an EV charger can run continuously for hours.

If the circuit or supply was not originally designed for that load:

  • Connections heat up

  • Terminations degrade

  • Neutral points weaken

  • Fire risk increases silently

Simply increasing the fuse size ignores all these realities.

Why We Are Extremely Cautious at IGP

At IGP, we never recommend increasing a fuse size without:

  • Thorough inspection of the entire wiring system

  • Assessing cable sizing

  • Checking neutral integrity

  • Reviewing your usual load and consumption patterns

  • Evaluating whether a proper TNB supply upgrade is required

We look at the whole system.

Because safety is never about one component.
  It is about coordination.

A Home Is More Than a Building

A home is where we keep:

  • Our life savings

  • Our memories

  • Our children’s laughter

  • Our parents’ comfort

  • Everything we have worked for

Let’s not put it at risk because of ignorance or shortcuts.

Electrical fires do not start loudly.

They start quietly — with heat, resistance, and small compromises.

Until one day, they don’t stay small anymore.

If you know someone who:

  • Recently installed an EV charger

  • Is considering upgrading their fuse

  • Has been told “just increase the fuse rating”

Please share this message with them.

Education prevents accidents.
And prevention is always cheaper than repair.

At Innovative Green Power (IGP), your safety is our top priority.

Your home should be a safe haven where EV charging happens safely and reliably.
